Threads Afar

Textile journeys, artisan stories, and meaningful travel programs curated by Norma Schafer.

Welcome

What’s next for me has been both a simmering idea and a pop-up. As I closed the chapter on Oaxaca Cultural Navigator by gifting it to my Zapotec-Mexican godson in early winter 2026, I soon realized I was not ready to retire, sit and stitch, and generally retreat from active engagement with the textile community.

I wanted to move forward by building more relationships, connecting with artisans, and developing meaningful travel programs that include hands-on experiences, bringing us all together to share and savor.

This is a work in progress.

Here, I will announce sales from my collections of textiles, folk art, and other related goods from around the world.

Each year, I will offer one or two travel destinations that include workshops, conversations with artisans about culture and community, and adventures into remote villages.

For 2027, we will go to Guatemala for an embroidery workshop on Lake Atitlán (no experience needed) and to Kyoto, Japan (sold out).

In 2028, I’m planning a textile and cultural tour to Laos in March. Get on the interested list.

Thank you for reading and following. Every ending is a new beginning!
