I launched Threads Afar in 2026 to continue connecting seekers of textile and craft experiences with artisan communities in parts of the world where beautiful things are still made by hand using traditional, time-honored techniques passed down through generations. Each year, we will offer one or two travel opportunities to meet creators in their communities.
Many are Indigenous people living in remote mountain villages beyond the reach of typical tourists. All are renowned, recognized for their quality workmanship and dedication to transmitting their culture through their hands. Some are invited to participate in the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market, while others are in museums and private collections.
When we travel, we explore, savor, taste, and take our time to talk about shared values, cultural similarities, and differences. We listen, speak softly, admire, and support. We hear stories about women and children, challenges and dreams. We understand the context of our lives and our common threads. We build bonds and create friendships with fellow travelers and those we meet.
We make memories.
Through the blog, you have an opportunity to learn first-hand what it is like to meet an indigo dyer in Japan, a Mayan embroiderer in the Guatemala Highlands, or a Hill Tribe weaver in Laos and Vietnam. We create dialogue together, and we learn from each other.
From time to time, I will offer artisan-made goods from my Threads Afar collection for sale. You can purchase these directly from me with a Zelle transfer, Venmo, or PayPal. You can also use a credit card to purchase when I send you a Square invoice. Instructions will be given when offerings are posted.
In 2007, two years after first visiting Oaxaca, Mexico, I founded Oaxaca Cultural Navigator, LLC. In early 2026, I transferred this business to the family I have been connected to and living with for 21 years. My passions are unchanged, only shifting direction.
In this new era of AI technology, when the synthetic voice is becoming commonplace, nothing will substitute for the intimacy and connection that relationships and meaning provide.
